Hiring a Moving Service to move you locally (Within a single or adjacent state)

When hiring a professional moving service to help you relocate, it is very important to know not only the reputation of the company you choose, but also how they are charging you for your move. Local moving jobs are almost always charged by the hour. Because of this, it is important to give your moving consultant an accurate list of items that you are moving. If you feel the list is too big to list over the phone or via email, you should request a visual. Moving services prefer visual on-site estimates for bigger moves because it helps them better understand your moving needs and they can ensure there are no surprises come the day of your move. Below are some important things to know to help you better understand the charges and process behing your local move.
Companies will charge for travel time from their location to you, as well as travel time back from your move to their office

Moving companies will charge you for the travel time it takes to actually get to your moving locations. The reason for this is because they pay their employees the moment they clock in at the office. Some companies choose not to charge for travel time or at least it may seem so, but generally they charge higher hourly rates in order to make up for that time. Always ask your moving consultant if they are going to charge you for travel time. Here at Eagle Lines, we determine the travel via gps and it is fixed based on that determination.
Take into account packing of boxes if you are having a moving service pack your boxes

Moving services will charge you the same hourly rate for packing of your boxes. Therefore it is important to keep that in mind when hiring a moving service to move you. The movers should work fast, but not reckless when packing your boxes. Some items that need to packed will be more labor intensive than others, for example dishes. Dishes require extra care and need to be individually wrapped in paper to avoid damages. Items such as linens or dvd's on the other hand, can be packed much faster.
Your inventory list is important

Your inventory list you provide the moving consultant is used in determining the amount of time it is going to take to get you moved into your new home. When estimating the amount of time it takes to move you, the moving consultant will not only take into account the travel and number of items, but how long it will take to properly wrap and pad those items in order to transport your items safely.
Don't Forget Wrapping Materials!

On top of the hourly charges, moving services will charge for the wrapping materials used during your move. At Eagle, we only charge you for rolls of tape and mattress covers. Pads and blankets are free.

Now that you know what to look for when selecting a moving company, the next step is to get quotes and compare rates. Don't forget to ask if they have any special discounts or promotions available at the time you call. You can get a quote from Eagle by filling out this inventory form, or giving us a call at (617) 923-3700.
